Writing Venice

A new approach to writing the city.

Writing Venice returns from November 29 - December 5, 2026,
led by writer and facilitator, Demi Anter.

What awaits you in Venice?

Jan Morris, Italo Calvino, Joseph Brodsky… Venice has captured the imaginations of writers throughout history. Join writer and facilitator Demi Anter in exploring poetry and prose inspired by La Serenissima, and discover ways of telling your own Venice stories.

Over five enriching days during the evocative winter season, we invite up to ten participants to engage in lively discussion, dedicated reading and writing time, constructive critique, and eye-opening creative foraging walks—while experiencing all of the beauty of the historical city at your fingertips.

Take part in deep textual analysis, identify strategies that help writers communicate a sense of place, and learn to access all the senses as we write and adventure through Venice together.

The outcome is a new way of looking at the world, engendering confidence for every new piece of writing you approach, whether poetry, travel writing, prose, or memoir.

This course is suitable for writers, artists, students, and the creatively curious of every genre and level.

Though the workshop is intensive with 20+ hours of teaching time across five days, you will also have a chance to explore the city and get to know like-minded writers from around the world while sharing un’ombra di vino, a taste of cicchetti, and a gorgeous view (or twenty).

What other participants have to say:

“A brilliant week that left me feeling alive, engaged, and present in my writing in a way that had been absent from me for months. A writer’s block cure-all, 10/10.”

“Seeing Venice, such an inspirational and unique place, was only made more magical and memorable with this workshop. I enjoyed every moment of reading while breathing the air and looking at the city’s beauty. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

“I left feeling fulfilled and in a community, and with a sense of purpose towards my current writing.”

“As someone who is very new to writing, I felt I was given invaluable tools to tap into my creativity and establish a consistent writing practice - I even shared my work for the first time!”

“I'd highly recommend this workshop to anyone seeking personal and creative expansion.”

“The Venice Workshop was a total gift to myself.”

“Demi’s hard work and commitment to make it a great experience for everyone showed in her curation of texts and exercises, but also in her ability to listen and adapt to different paces if needed, and to create a safe and welcoming space for anyone to share their work.”

“As a sporadic writer, I felt incredibly welcome in Demi’s Venice program. Both the group, destination, and literature examples were so inspiring. Demi did a fantastic job gluing it all together to one memorable week.”

“My week learning from Demi was a wonderful way to cultivate inspiration not only as a writer, but generally as an artist as well. Learning from Demi and the other participants allowed me to translate my existing skills and open my mind to new forms of expression. Being in Venice during the off-season is a truly magical experience, as is sharing moments of exploration with like-minded individuals.”

“Definitely a confidence builder, I would not think twice about signing up. Plus, Venice is absolutely magical.”

‘I sincerely liked every little and big memory of our week. Some of my friends at home told me I was still a bit “afterglooming” when I saw them later.’
